Buying toys for a cat can sometimes feel like a challenging task, you might spend a large amount of money on a fancy gadget for them to stroll straight past and sometimes you give them an old box and it is the best thing ever. Buying toys of a Maine Coon cat can be especially tough, it needs to be robust enough to withstand their giant nature, which is while I have complied the top tried and test Maine Coon cats toys to ensure you are not wasting your money.

What to look for when purchasing toys for a Maine Coon

When you think of a Maine Coon, you will probably think of a majestic giant cat, they are often gentle giants but they do also have an active mind which needs to be kept busy.

With this in mind, when trying to find the perfect Maine coon toys, think robust but also think cognitive. They are an intelligent need and therefore we need to think about keeping their minds active.

Maine Coons also love water and while we are not suggesting you purchase them their own pool, there are some water-based toys available, some of which can be handmade. Remember cats should always be supervised when given toys with water.

Our favourite cat toys suitable for Maine Coons (and other large breed cats)

These interactive fish are great stimulation for ALL cats

Interactive Swimming Robot Fish Toys

Remember we said Maine Coons love water? These robot fish are perfect for support that need as well as their hunter instinct.

Cats love their automated robotic fins that automatically begin moving around and flashing as soon as they’re placed into the water. Then when you take them out, they automatically turn off to save power.

Our cats adore these fish toys and they provide so much stimulation.

Again, it is important to remember, cats should not be left unsupervised when playing with water-based toys.

Zoomundo Large Cat Tree Climbing Tower Tree

A large cat tree is essential for a Maine Coon cat. A cat tree provides the opportunity to express natural behaviours such as climbing and stretching, as well as keeping their claws trim.

We have a whole post on the best cat trees for large breed cats but our favourite is the Zoomundo Climbing Tower.

zoomundo cat tree for maine coons

At an incredible 255cm, this is the tallest cat tower we have managed to find which still maintains a great quality. This cat tower is perfect for large cats who love to climb and watch over from a height.

The tree has multiple different levels as well as beds at different heights making it very interactive and perfect for curious cats.

This tree also comes in a variety of colours to help match your home decor. The only minor downside of this big cat tower is the width in comparison to the height, meaning it may not be as sturdy as some of the shorter trees with wider bases, however, in the reviews we have not seen anyone bring this up as an issue.

Cat Springs

We have mentioned these time and time again on Ginger Cat House, but cat springs should be essential for every cat breed not just Maine Coons.

Cats springs are so simple and low cost, however, we are sure they will become your cat’s firm favourite. The lightweight toy provides chase and excitement guaranteed to get even the laziest cat moving.

Top tip for ensuring your cat stays interested in their toys:
ROTATE!
It is important to rotate your cat’s toys often, every few days remove a toy and replace it with a different one, keep doing this within a cycle of 4-5 different toys.
This will help to prevent them from becoming bored with a toy and you feeling like you need to constantly buy new toys.
Remember a cat with an active mind is a happy cat!

Savic Quiz Puzzle Feeder

If your Maine Coon is food orientated you may want to invest in a toy which engages them with a food reward.

Savic Quiz Feeder for cats

Puzzle feeders are designed to stimulate a cat’s cognitive needs while also providing them with treats or helping to slow down their eating time.

It is important to remember cats are natural hunters, they are not designed to eat from bowls – this is a human trait. Therefore, puzzle and interactive feeders such as the Savic Quiz can be a fantastic toy for keeping a Maine coon busy.

If you are really interested in looking into different, more engaging ways you feed your cat, we also recommend looking into the highly-rated Doc and Phoebe Indoor Hunting Feeder.

Maine coon cat toy - wall shelves

Mounted Cat Wall Shelf

If you further want to encourage your Maine Coon cat‘s adventurous nature then you may want to invest in some wall-mounted climbing shelves. These can be especially good if you are looking for stimulating toys for an indoor cat.

When purchasing this kind of item, remember it will be an investment – meaning you will probably want to pay out more in order for it to last.

When purchasing for a Maine Coon remember to take into consideration their large size and increased weight, you will want it to be stable and for them to feel secure while using it.

Yeow Cat Nip Stinkies

The majority of cats LOVE catnip, it excites many of their senses and calls on their hunting instinct.

But not all catnip toys are made equal. At Ginger Cat House, we have found the American brand ‘Yeow’ to spark the most interest in our cats. In fact, it is only Yeow which gets them drooling.

Bring catnip toys out every so often, it is best to not leave them constantly lying around. This prevents them from becoming bored or even ‘immune’ to the smell, allowing it to continue being an exciting toy for a Maine Coon cat.

Karpo Catnip Electric Realistic Simulation Toy Fish

Our final recommendation for engaging Maine Coon cat toys is the Karpo flipping fish. What makes this toy great is that it is big, making it perfect for large breed cats to grab and play with.

Karpo quite literally looks like a fish out of water and engages your cat by flipping around the floor after being charged via USB. It is also touch activated to further engage your cat.

This particular flipping fish does have a section to place catnip, for further stimulation, however, we did not find this catnip to be as strong as the Yeow range previously mentioned.

Remember: All cats love to play and all cats need to have focused stimulation in order to stop them releasing their energy in other ways.

Maine Coon cats are no different and by buying for their natural strengths and like such hunting and water, you will be buying a toy that they will be sure to engage with.

It is also important to remember your cat also loves to engage with you, so get involved in playtime to further build your relationship.
